Albania is certainly one of the most mystical and least known countries in Europe, which is mostly due to the years of isolation that Albanian people have endured during the regime of socialist leaders.

 

Albania due to its uniqueness has shot up on every holiday destination list and one of the reasons why is city Shkoder) and it is a town on the shores of Lake Skadar in northwestern Albania, at the source of the Bojana River with approximately 110,000 inhabitants. It is considered the oldest and historically most important city in Albania and an important cultural and economic center.

Shkodra is also known as the center of Catholicism in Albania and a perfect example that different religions can live together in one country. The city was founded in the fourth century BC and has long had a protective role - it protected the trade route on the rivers Drin and Bruno.

 

The most important historical monuments in Shkodra are the Plubi (Lead) mosque and the Hamam (Turkish bath).

 

Shkodra's biggest tourist attraction is the Rozafa Fortress, which is more than two thousand years old. From this fortress, famous for the epic song "Zidanje Skadra na Bojani", there is a panoramic view of the entire city and its surroundings. Within the fortress is the Church of St. Stephen, which was built during the XIII and XIV centuries, and later was converted into a mosque.

 

Shkodra is home to one of the most grandiose Catholic cathedrals on the Balkan Peninsula. It is dedicated to St. Stephen, and after its restoration, Mother Teresa attended her inauguration in 1991. Although born in Skopje, her origin is from this city.

 

Shkodra is characterized by its narrow winding streets with a very dynamic street trade. Today it is a very interesting destination for lovers of history and legends with interesting surrounding attractions such as Bridge Mes, Remains of City Sarda, Skadar Lake and Castle Lezha.
