Skopje

skopje(3).jpg skopje(4).jpg skopje(5).jpg skopje.jpg

Skopje is a modern city and a true European capital. What distinguishes it from Zagreb, and what makes it like Budapest, Prague, Ljubljana, and Belgrade ("neighboring" cities), is the connection to the river. Powerful architecture, imaginatively lit bridges, street musicians, cafes all revolve around this connection.

Skopje is also the capital and largest city of Macedonia with a long tradition and rich history. In 1963, Skopje was hit by a strong earthquake and 75% of the buildings were destroyed. The main reason despite a long tradition, Skopje enjoys a modern look. Skopje also has the largest bazaar outside Turkey - the Old [Bazaar], which is a kind of blend of Muslim and Christian culture.

The main Square of Macedonia is marked by a statue of a warrior on horseback. It is a tribute to famous conquerors Alexander the Great, but that is not his official name. The square and its surroundings are especially impressive at night when they are very effectively lit.

The old part of the city is the most interesting for tourists. Kale Fortress is located on a hill above the city and dominates the view. It is good to climb the walls because the view of the city is the best from that place.

The old part of Skopje is an autochthonous and preserved example of a Turkish mahala. It consists of a bazaar, mosques, and a market. An old stone bridge from the 15th century leads from the center of the town towards the bazaar over the river Vardar. The bazaar offers an interesting offer of bureks, various baklava and kebabs.

There are several interesting museums in the city: Archaeological MuseumCity MuseumEthnic MuseumHistory MuseumMuseum of Modern Art, and Museum of Natural Sciences of Macedonia.

There are also several theaters: Macedonian National TheaterMacedonian Opera and BalletTurkish Theater, Drama Theater and Theater for Children and Youth.

Above the town rises the mountain Vodno to which the cable car rides. At the top is the Millennium Cross, which is visible at night from afar because it is well lit. During the evening flight to Skopje, it can be seen from afar and is like a lighthouse for airplanes.

Visiting this stunning monument of Balkan culture will leave you breathless!
