Ilovik

ilovik (2).jpg ilovik (3).jpg

The island of Ilovik is overgrown with the unique Mediterranean vegetation. Ilovik is said to be an island of flowers because almost every house has oleanders, palm trees, roses, and other flowers, and the specificity of this island is the tall eucalyptus trees. Due to its very good maritime traffic position, since ancient times, the Ilovac Channel is used for anchoring, so we find traces of different historical periods on the islands.

The southernmost inhabited island of the Lošinj Islands is the fishing village of the same name, with a population of about 170 today. The first Croatian settlers came to the island at the end of the 18th century from Veli Lošinj and since then the present-day settlement of ILOVIK has been developed. The locals of Ilovik are engaged in viticulture and vegetable growing, which enables them many wells that feed this land with water, as well as fishing, sheep, and tourism.

The location of Ilovik is beautiful with a picturesque small bay, which is protected on the north side by the uninhabited islet of Sv. Petar on which is the cemetery of the locals of Ilovik. The largest bay with a sandy beach is in Paržine on the southeast side of the island.

Between the two islands stretches a well-protected channel, 2.5 km long and 300 m wide, which serves as a harbor for local fishermen as well as numerous boaters who come here to enjoy the unspoiled nature. Its water area is naturally protected from all winds, except somewhat from the south, and can provide a safe stay for yachts and smaller boats.
