Osijek

Osijek is a city situated in eastern Croatia. It is the largest city in Slavonia, the fourth largest city in Croatia and the head of Osijecko-Baranjska County. The city is an industrial, administrative, judicial and cultural center.

Osijek consists of the old town named – “Tvrđa” (Fortress) , built in the early 18th century in the Baroque style, followed by the Upper, Lower and New Town which had influences of classicism, historicism and Art Nouveau, Retfale and Visnjevac.

The first theater performances were held in baroque Osijek in the 18th century, and the first theater was built in 1866. The Croatian National Theater is still the most important theater institution in Slavonia.

The Osijek Fortress complex was built in the 18th century with imposing ramparts and city gates centered with main square. This complex made Osijek is the most important military, economic, and cultural center of Slavonia region.

The Upper Town - part of Osijek is a historical treasury: old sacral, cultural and historical monuments, the Capuchin monastery, the neo-Gothic church of St. Peter and Paul.
